I love skincare and trying products, but struggle with extremely sensitive and acne-prone skin which makes things difficult. I’ve been prescribed oral steroids on numerous occasions due to skin sensitivity and products I’m allergic to. Needless to say, I literally have the definition of sensitive skin. A little over a year ago, I struggled with the worst skin of my life and felt like I tried everything under the sun to make it better. Without doing anything crazy or spending a ton of money, I finally found a process of great products that work for me and my skin. My daily skincare routine is as follows: wash, tone, moisturize, topical medicine, and balance pills. I’m sure there are better products out there, but here is a collection of things that FINALLY calmed my skin down without an allergic reaction.
Almost every doctor I’ve ever seen tells me my hormones are imbalanced but never has “balancing” suggestions. Yes, I eat healthy, workout, and drink a sh*t ton of water… so, what else can I do? A few dermatologists suggested Accutane which I felt was a super lazy response. I was 100% not down for Accutane and, despite my skin being awful, I didn’t think my skin was bad enough for such an invasive treatment. Almost completely hopeless, I was starting to get super frustrated with everything I was trying and did some research on gut health. About a year ago, in the middle of this, I heard about Balance Pills. These pills are the #1 reason why I think my skin did a 360. I take four pills every morning and noticed a difference right away. I’m not a doctor, so take these at your own risk, but I was desperate for a fix and call this my, “holy grail” product.
Desperate for a change in my skin, I decided to give Proactiv a try. I started using the deep cleansing face wash, loved it, and decided it works super well for my skin. Morning and night, I follow it up with Proactiv toner, a moisturizer, and Proactiv’s adapalene (which I previously had to have a prescription for). Out of these three Proactiv products I use daily, I think the adapalene has the biggest effect on my skin and keeping potential breakouts under control.
As far as moisturizer goes, I’ve used First Aid Beauty’s ultra repair cream for almost 10 years. I’m actually scared to use anything else because I know it does the job, is affordable, and my skin is used to it. From time to time, I also use First Aid Beauty’s clay face mask that honestly does wonders as well. I use it whenever I think about it (every few weeks) and see an immediate improvement in texture, redness, and exfoliation.
Bonus Points- Products I Love:
+ I just started using Farmacy’s honeymoon glow and, stay tuned, but I think it’s one of my favorite products I’ve ever tried. I’ve been using it once a week at night, and wake up glowing, smooth, and with dewy skin.
+ My mom got me into and swears by The Ordinary’s virgin marula oil which I love on my face and arms. Their niacinamide supposedly does wonders on acne scars, but I think I use it too inconsistently to work!
+ Summer Fridays’ jet lag mask is great, the perfect consistency, and gives me skin a deep moisturizing treatment.
